2000 Paul Mathew Chardonnay
Dutton Ranch, Russian River Valley

2000 Paul Mathew Chardonnay

Availability: Sold out.

This vineyard, owned by the Duttons, is located at the home ranch property and is known as 'Big Block'. It is in the Russian River Valley appellation as well as the Green Valley appellation, which is the coolest part of the Russian River Valley. The vineyard has two clones, the Raffo clone and #13 UCD clone, and was planted in 1994.

Low input natural winemaking techniques were used in the production of this wine. The grapes were whole cluster pressed and the juice was transferred to French oak barrels (33% new). The indigenous yeasts started fermentation five days later. The malolactic fermentation followed and finished in January. The wine was cold settled and loosely filtered before bottling.

Less than 100 ppm of total SO2 is within the new proposed guidelines for organic winemaking. We were able to achieve this level due to low input winemaking.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2000 growing season started hot and cool but ended with a long cool spell pushing harvest back, adding extra hangtime. The grapes were picked on October 31st at 24.1 Brix. Bouquet of ripe pears, minerals, honey, lemon and toasty oak. This medium body wine has a soft creamy texture with seamless flavors of pear, honey, lemon, butter, clove and toasty oak.

2000 Paul Mathew, Chardonnay, Dutton Ranch, Russian River Valley- Alluring aroma's of ripe pears, buttered apples and citrus attract you to a glass filled with vibrant flavors of tropical fruits, ripe Fuji apples and young creamy banana. The finish is delicious with lingering flavors of apples and citrus. A well balanced wine and a definite WOW [Wine Of the Week]. An amazing value too, I thought this was easily a $40 Chardonnay when I tried it. Limited production. Available at Olivers Markets and select fine wine shops @ $14.99.
